PRU Blue Color Guide:

  • P.R.U. Blue is a grayish-blue color used primarily for camouflage of RAF reconnaissance aircraft. In addition, the abbreviation PRU stands for Photo Reconnaissance Unit, which also emphasizes the original purpose of the color.
  • P.R.U. Blue was used for the complete painting of RAF high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft from 1941-1945. Prior to this, the color Camotint Green was used for this purpose.
  • P.R.U. Blue was also used to camouflage RAF high-altitude fighters during World War II. This scheme called for the use of Medium Sea Grey for the upper surfaces, while the lower surfaces were to be painted in P.R.U. Blue. This scheme was then reapplied in 1951-1965 for photo reconnaissance aircraft.
  • BS 636 PRU Blue, which is the successor to MAP PRU Blue, was used in the RAF Overseas camouflage scheme from 1951-1965. This scheme involved the use of BS 636 PRU Blue for the lower surfaces, while the upper surfaces were usually painted in BS 638 Dark Sea Grey and BS 641 Dark Green camouflage, either BS 639 Light Slate Grey and BS 637 Medium Sea Grey camouflage for high-altitude fighters and jet bombers.
